Applying the waste hierarchy

Requirements of government legislation

Government legislation within the EU Waste Framework Directive sets out five steps for dealing with waste within the ‘waste hierarchy’. The waste hierarchy has been transposed into UK law through the Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2011.

If your business or organisation produces or handles waste, applying the waste hierarchy will prompt you to give priority to:

  • Prevention
  • Reuse
  • Recycling
  • Recovery of energy

These options need to be explored before resorting to landfill disposal.

Services designed to help apply the waste hierarchy

Our services have been specifically created to help our clients apply the waste hierarchy. We will segregate your unwanted items into items that can be reused, recycled or recovered.

Assets not fit for reuse will be dismantled and segregated into their component parts (metal, wood, plastic, paper, card) and recycled.

Items that still have a reuse value will be sold into the local market place. Any value gained from reselling unwanted assets will be shared with our clients or can be donated to causes they support.

PCs, IT and electrical goods will be wiped clean of data in line with data protection and the WEEE Directive.

Items that can be reused could be donated to support local schools, UK charities and community groups.
