how to store a mattress
The best way to store a mattress is to clean it, let it dry completely, cover it in a breathable mattress bag and lay it flat on a raised, clean surface with nothing heavy on top. A mattress stored this way keeps its shape and stays fresh, whether it is in storage for a few weeks or several months.
This guide covers cleaning, moving, positioning and caring for each type of mattress, including what to do when it comes out of storage.

UK mattress sizes and the space they need
Size | Standard dimensions |
Single | 90 x 190 cm |
Small double | 120 x 190 cm |
Double | 135 x 190 cm |
King | 150 x 200 cm |
Super king | 180 x 200 cm |
Cot | 60 x 120 cm |
Cot bed | 70 x 140 cm |
A mattress needs a clear area at least as large as its own surface to lie flat. Plan for this when you choose your unit. Our guide to self storage unit sizes can help.
How to clean a mattress before storage
- Strip the bed and wash the mattress protector separately.
- Vacuum both sides and the edges using an upholstery attachment.
- Freshen it. Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda over the surface, leave it for a few hours, then vacuum it off.
- Spot clean marks with a cloth and a small amount of mild detergent. Dab rather than rub, and never soak the mattress.
- Dry it fully. Leave it upright in a warm, well-ventilated room, ideally for a full day.
The dos
Do use a breathable mattress bag
A purpose-made mattress cover keeps dust out while letting air circulate. Check our Box Shop for covers and packing materials.
Do keep it flat
Laying a mattress flat supports the springs and filling evenly, which helps it keep its shape.
Do raise it off the floor
Place it on a clean pallet, board or a flat, sturdy piece of furniture such as a covered table top.
Do keep it away from the walls
A small gap lets air circulate around the mattress.
Do store the bed base with it
Keeping the base, headboard and mattress together makes reassembly simple. Divan bases often split into two halves, which makes them easier to move and store.
The don'ts
Don't seal it in airtight plastic for long periods
Heavy plastic traps moisture against the fabric. If you use plastic to protect a mattress on moving day, swap it for a breathable cover once it is in storage.
Don't leave it on its side for weeks
A mattress can stand on its side for a short time, such as in a removal van. Over long periods, the filling and springs can shift and sag.
Don't place heavy items on top
Boxes and furniture leave permanent dents. Only light, soft items such as pillows or bedding should go on a stored mattress.
Don't fold or roll it unless the manufacturer allows it
Folding can damage springs and break down foam. Some foam mattresses can be rolled, but check the manufacturer's guidance first.
Don't carry it by the handles
Handles are designed for turning a mattress on the bed, not for carrying its full weight. Lift from underneath, with one person at each end.
Storing different types of mattress
Mattress type | Storage advice |
Pocket sprung | Store flat. Avoid any weight on top, as individual springs can lose shape. |
Open coil | Store flat and keep it dry, as the springs are more exposed to moisture. |
Memory foam | Store flat. Foam can take on the shape of anything resting on it. |
Latex | Store flat in a breathable cover. Latex is heavy, so plan for two people to move it. |
Hybrid | Treat as a sprung mattress and store flat. |
Pillow top | Store flat, top side up, so the comfort layer is not compressed. |
Cot and cot bed | Clean, dry and cover, then store flat on top of other light, flat items. |
Futon and sofa bed mattresses | Store flat or loosely folded only if designed to fold. |
Positioning your mattress in a self storage unit
Load the mattress after heavy furniture and boxes, so it can lie flat on a stable surface without anything being placed on top. If you are storing more than one, lay them flat on top of each other with the heaviest at the bottom and a sheet between each.
Moving a mattress to storage
- Put the cover on before it leaves the bedroom to protect it from dirt and scuffs.
- Carry it on its side through doorways and on stairs, with one person at each end.
- In the van, keep it on its side against a flat surface and secure it so it cannot bend.
- Lay it flat as soon as it reaches your unit.
If you are storing a mattress during a move, container storage and traditional self storage are quick access options. For longer stays, drive-up self storage is the long-term choice. Pickfords offers free collection for drive-up self storage and storage containers in Horsham, Edinburgh and Manchester.
Checking on a stored mattress
If you are storing for several months, visit occasionally to check the cover is intact and nothing has been placed on top. Many Pickfords facilities offer 24/7 access.
When your mattress comes out of storage
- Remove the cover and let the mattress air in a well-ventilated room for a few hours.
- Vacuum it and check for marks.
- Rotate it, and turn it if it is double-sided, to help it settle back into shape.
- Allow a few nights for it to feel fully comfortable again.
If you no longer want the mattress
Some charities accept mattresses in good condition, but many cannot, so ask first. Your council can usually collect it as bulky waste, and some areas offer mattress recycling. Our guide to house clearance explains how to sell, donate and dispose of household items responsibly.

- Can you store a mattress on its side?
For a short time, such as during a move, yes. For longer periods, store it flat so the springs and filling stay evenly supported.
- Should I put my mattress in plastic for storage?
Use a breathable mattress bag. Airtight plastic can trap moisture if it stays on for a long period.
- How long can a mattress stay in storage?
A clean, dry mattress that is covered and stored flat can stay in self storage for many months.
- Can I fold a memory foam mattress for storage?
Only if the manufacturer says it can be folded or rolled. Otherwise, store it flat.
- What should I do when my mattress comes out of storage?
Remove the cover, let it air for a few hours, vacuum it and rotate it to help it settle.
