Mark Taylor, Managing Director of Pickfords is one of four ‘Big Bosses’ who donned a disguise to go undercover within the business to find out what happens on the front line.
Unlike many companies, the pandemic boosted Pickford’s business - the stamp duty holiday encouraged many house buyers, but the increase in workload also helped to highlight the lack of new boots on the ground.
With a big increase in customers but an ageing workforce and a shortfall of new applicants, Mark wanted to take part in the programme to try and find out why it’s proving so hard to recruit the next generation of Pickfords staff.
In the middle of one of Pickfords’ busiest years on record, Mark starts his mission by spending the day with Frankie, one of the company’s longest standing employees.
Mark plans to find out why it is that Frankie has stayed at the company for so long, in the hope that he can use what he discovers to attract new recruits.
Next up, Mark pays a visit to one of his teams in east London who have given the company the thumbs down in a recent staff satisfaction survey. What he discovers leaves him reeling and promising that he must do better.
For his last undercover mission, he joins forces with Anthony in Newcastle – one of the company’s newest recruits. Mark wants to know how he can attract younger people like Anthony to make their career in removals.
In a dramatic finale, we discover what changes Mark will make to his business as a result of his undercover journey. How will his employees react when the truth is finally revealed?
